What is Paleo?

OK...what is this Paleo business?

Well, let's start out with what the word "Paleo" means.  Paleo literally means "older or ancient".  So in simple terms, Paleo is eating the way our ancestors would have eaten; before Velveeta, before Monsanto, before Walmart.

Most proponents of Paleo support it because it makes sense evolutionarily.  Well, as a Christian, I also think it makes sense from a creation standpoint.  God put us on this earth equipped to survive and to thrive in a garden setting.  He did not place us in the middle of a Walmart, already stocked with processed foods and say "Thou shalt eat Cheetos".  No, he said...

“I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so."

No wonder we are all fat, sick, tired, and lazy.  We are living off of stuff that tastes like food but isn't even the real deal.  We may be loving how that Cinnabon is tasting but we are missing out on what we were put here to enjoy!

So let's break it down.  Paleo.  What can you eat?

  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Natural sugars from honey and maple syrup
  • Healthy oils (including oils from meats...like BACON--I know that doesn't "sound" healthy but just go with me here)
Cut out...

  • Grains
  • Dairy
  • Legumes
  • White potatoes
  • Refined sugar
  • Unhealthy oils (like vegetable/canola oil)
  • Overly processed crap
And that is basically it.  For a complete and exhaustive list of "cans and can'ts", check out the ultimate paleo guide .
